Character Counts! |
Don Phillips, Superintendent of the PUSD, wrote, “Character is the heart of who we are, and we develop the seeds of this character at a very young age. Our character helps us sort out right from wrong, our social and civic responsibility, and making healthy choices for ourselves and others”. Character education helps students understand that the qualities of being a good person are expressed in practices across cultures and are not exclusively demonstrated by individuals in one’s own group. Many Rolling Hills teachers, staff members, and parents have undergone training in the six core CHARACTER COUNTS! values or pillars to provide guidance to our students in these ethical areas: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. |
|---|---|
| Parent Education & Parent Library | Working with the school, the PTA offers programs that address the issues and concerns faced by many parents. The Parent Library, located in the Family Center (Room 17), features books and videos on parent-education themes. |
| Peaceful Playgrounds | The PTA supports the school’s commitment to the Peaceful Playgrounds program with funding for equipment and volunteers. Peaceful Playgrounds provides well-marked recreational activities with consistent rules that help children to enter into purposeful play, reducing playground confrontations and injuries. |
| Red Ribbon Week | Red Ribbon week is an anti-drug abuse initiative. Like CHARACTER COUNTS!, Red Ribbon continues the discussion of healthy lifestyle choices and good decision making. The program is designed to reduce risk factors and to enhance protective factors related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among students. |
| Founders’ Day | The PTA supports Founders’ Day, a reminder of the substantial role that PTA has played locally, regionally, and nationally in supporting parent involvement, and working on behalf of all children and families. We annually make a “Founders’ Day Freewill Offering” – a birthday gift for the PTA – to show our support for the state and national organizations of which we are a member. |
| Reflections | The PTA organizes the school’s participation in the annual Reflections program, an arts recognition and achievement program sponsored by the National PTA for students. Reflections provides opportunities for students to express themselves creatively and to receive positive recognition for their works of art. This year’s theme is “I can make a difference by ….”. |
| Honorary Service Awards | The PTA selects recipients of Honorary Service Awards each spring and presents the awards at the annual Volunteer Tea. These awards are available to recognize the service and dedication of both individuals and organizations to the school and our students. |
| Community Concerns | The PTA works with the school’s community liaison to participate in the annual Adopt-a-Family and Spring Food Drive programs, which support families in need within the Poway Unified School District. More information will be forthcoming. |
| Puma Tracks Newsletter | If you have news to share with the community regarding school-related functions, events, opportunities, awards, or other important notices, please send them to the Puma Tracks editor at: newsletter@rollinghillspta.org. Please submit all items at least ten school days in advance of the publication date. All submissions may be edited for content, style, and space, and must be approved by the PTA President and the Principal before they will be included in the newsletter. |
| Halloween Party | The annual Rolling Hills PTA Halloween Party is an exciting enjoyable family event. There is a costume competition for all age groups (including adults!), games, prizes, food, and a walk-through haunted house. The Party does require the time and energy of a large number of volunteers. The committee still needs a few good men or women for help in running these events. Whether you wish to commit at this level or can only help for an hour or two setting up booths, decorations, running games, or tearing down afterwards, volunteering your time will help make our Party a success! See our ‘Volunteer Opportunities’ section for more information. |
| Book Fairs | Two book fairs will be held this year, one in October and one in the spring (date to be determined). While the kids will get to browse the book fair during the course of the week, an open-house will be held one evening so parents can come and browse too. |
| Talent Show | Enjoy this great night of entertainment for the entire family as our students share an exciting variety of talents. The many talented students at Rolling Hills will impress you. Slated to happen in early 2008, sign-ups etc will be announced closer to the date. However, practice can start NOW! |
| Family Nights | Join us for some fun family evenings. They are a terrific way to get to know other Rolling Hills families. This year’s activities will include Family Movie Nights, a Spring Carnival, the 3rd Annual Stuffed Animal Pet Show, and the Polar Party, to name just a few. |
| Assemblies | These fun, yet educational, gatherings are held 3-4 times per year for the entire student body. Organizations from around San Diego County are invited to perform at Rolling Hills to educate and inform our kids on a variety of topics. This year’s invitees include the San Diego Philharmonic Quintet and SlamJAM! |
